NB: the Red Trail description states the trail surface is "gravel". This is flat out incorrect. Not one yard of the trail is gravel.

I did not enjoy hiking the Red Trail and was very happy to return to the trail head parking lot.

Two loops trails of 2.7 and 5.4 miles. Nicely marked and maintained. Nice elevation changes throughout the hike. Good for walking the dog.

On 2016 Thanksgiving Friday #OptOutside, absolutely devoid of wildlife. No birds nor bird sounds, no deer, no squirrels, no snakes, no turtles, nada. i was really alone out there.

The New Hope Overlook Trail is the longest trail at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area at around 5.5 miles. It is composed of two loops - red and blue - that make a figure 8. The Blue Loop is only 2.5 miles if you're looking for a shorter hike. Much of the trail follows the lake shore closely and provides nice views. It's a natural surface trail with a surprising amount of up and down to make it a very enjoyable hike. The New Hope access area to Jordan Lake is a fee area - an entrance fee is charged every day in the summer and on weekends in spring and fall. No entrance fee is required in the winter, as many other amenities are closed, so that's a good time to check out the trail.

The Red Trail has a very rocky, rooty, surface. I had great difficulty maintaining footing especially on up and down hills where rain may have eroded the trail. My ankles became weaker and weaker as I walked and I slowed considerably. One trail runner passed me, I felt he was taking a chance on falling. Thankfully, I did not slip nor fall.

Another reviewer remarked about beautiful views of Jordan Lake. The Red Trail has one bench in its entire length where the trail comes closest to the lake and it offers a nice view from that bench. Almost all the trail has no view of the lake at all, it is engulfed by the forest and the view is only of trees in the forest.

Great trail with occasional looks at the lake. It is a well marked trail in a beautiful forest.

One of the best hikes I've done in the Triangle area. Lots of great lake views, frequent elevation change (kind of unique to this part of the lake; enables nice views and more varied hiking), and passes through multiple forest types (hardwood, pine, etc...). Also nice distance options of ~2.5 mile loop with a bonus ~3 mile loop (making the combined loops ~5.5miles). Highly recommended

I'm not an experienced trail hiker and I'm 81 years old, keep these in mind.
